Fruit! / Fruta!

One of the first morning activities of Ian is “greet” the plants at the garden. He has seen his Auntie Kathy giving reiki to the plants and tries to do the same touching every plant carefully, saying something to them that I cannot understand yet. He also likes watering the flowers after his morning swinging. I am surprised how skilful he is using the hose and watering can. At the beginning, he used them just to play and watered everywhere, but now, he focus on watering specifically the shrubs and flowers. He can recognize which plants needs water, which are dry or wet, so he does not water the plants more than once.

Una de las primeras actividades que realiza Ian en la mañana es saludar a las plantas en el jardín. Él ha visto a su tía Kathy darles reiki a las plantas y trata de hacer lo mismo, él tocar cada planta cuidadosamente, diciéndoles algo que no puedo entender todavía. También le gusta regar las plantas después de columpiarse. Estoy sorprendida la habilidad que tiene para utilizar la manguera y la regadera. Al principio, él sólo jugaba con el agua y mojaba por lados, pero ahora, se concentra en regar específicamente los arbustos y flores. Él puede reconocer que plantas necesitan agua, cuales están secas o mojadas, por lo que sólo las riega cuando lo necesitan.

I supposed to talk about the fruits but I got excited talking about his cute activities at the garden. Let’s start again…

Se supone que iba a hablar de las frutas, pero me emocione mucho hablando sobre las tiernas actividades de mi chanchito en el jardín. Empecemos de nuevo...

The first time he saw the fruit trees he was so excited for his discovery, said very loudly Fruit! Fruit!, reaped some and put them into the fruit dish. I was really surprised Ian could recognize the fruits because they were entirely green. Since then, he visits the fruit trees every morning but now, he understands the fruit is not ripe yet.

La primera vez que Ian vio los árboles frutales estaba tan emocionado por su descubrimiento que gritaba Fuit! Fuit! cosechó algunas y las puso en la frutera. Estuve realmente sorprendida que Ian pudiera reconocer las frutas ya que estaban totalmente verdes. Desde entonces, él visita los árboles frutales todas las mañanas, pero ahora el entiende que las frutas aun no están maduras.

Currently, he is very interested on fruit names and he has learned some fruit names listening The Wiggles’ song “Fruit Salad”. In order to support his interest, I’ve made a placemat with photos of fruits and vegetables. He likes it, and asks us to name the pictures. When he thinks we are not near, he tries to pronounce the names of the pictures (he is shy … until he gets the pronunciation correct).

Actualmente, él esta muy interesado en aprender los nombres de las frutas y ha aprendido algunos escuchando la canción Fruit Salad de The Wiggles. A fin de apoyar su interés he hecho un individual con fotos de frutas y vegetales. A el le encanta y siempre nos pregunta por los nombres. Cuando el piensa que esta solito, trata de pronunciar los nombres (él es tímido … hasta que logra la pronunciación perfecta).

Learning Opportunities in the garden / Oportunidades de Aprendizaje en el jardín

Since we began our garden implementation, the backyard has become a very attractive place for Ian. it is no longer just a place wide enough for him to practice his gross motor activities. Now, it has been transformed into a place with multiple opportunities for learning. There he is learning different things in a very playful, attractive and therefore, so significant way. In this place I can see clearly how the game and experimentation are synonymous with learning.

Desde que empezamos la implementación de nuestro jardín, nuestro patio trasero se ha convertido en un lugar muy atractivo para Ian.
Ya no solo es un lugar suficientemente amplio para que él practique su motricidad gruesa. Ahora, se ha trasformado en un lugar con múltiples oportunidades de aprendizaje. Ahí él está aprendiendo diversas cosas de una forma muy lúdica, atractiva y por tanto, de modo significativo. En este lugar puedo ver claramente como el juego y la experimentación son sinónimos de aprendizaje.

A short visit / Una visita muy breve

The day that we planted flower seeds, I discovered that the entrance of our house is a nice place where Ian and I can do many things. There is a grapefruit tree that gives good shade, there is a patch of lawn (that needs a mow) and a garden ready to flourish (so I hope). Currently, one of the first activities of the day is to water our garden, by the way today I noticed that some of our seedlings have sprouted; at least I hope that they are our seeds and not some weeds.

El día que sembramos las semillas de flores, descubrí que la entrada de nuestra casa es un lugar acogedor donde Ian y yo podremos hacer muchas cosas. Hay un árbol de toronjas que da buena sombra, hay césped (que necesita cuidado) y un jardín a punto de florecer (espero). Ahora, una de las primeras actividades del día es salir a regar nuestro insipiente jardín, por cierto hoy he visto algunas plantitas naciendo, pero no estoy segura de si son producto de mis semillas o es mala hierba.

One day, while watering the lawn I saw something that seemed to be a very strange stone, but when I went to grab it for Ian’s collection, I got a huge scare! It was not a stone, it was a huge frog – maybe a toad. In the past I would have ran away, but I thought that Ian would like to see our visitor. Far from being startled, Ian wanted to touch it, but I told him that he was asleep and that we must not annoy it. That day we made many trips to see the frog. Every few minutes when Ian remembered, he said “Frog”, took my hand and took me to the garden; he approached with great care and said to me “shhhh” not to make any noise because, of course, the frog was sleeping. The next day, the first word he uttered when he awoke was “FROG” and ran toward the garden, but Mr. Frog had already left.

Un día, mientras regábamos el césped vi algo que parecía ser una piedra muy extraña y, como ando recolectando “material” para Ian, me acerque para observarla de más cerca y, vaya susto! no era una piedra, era un enorme sapo. En otra ocasión habría salido corriendo, pero pensé que Ian debería conocer a nuestro visitante. Lejos de asustarse Ian quiso tocarlo, pero le dije que dormía y que no debemos molestarlo. Ese día hemos salido muchas veces a ver al sapo. Cada vez que Ian lo recordaba me decía Frog, tomaba mi mano y me llevaba al jardín; se acercaba con mucho cuidado y me decía shhhh para que no hiciera ruido, claro, el sapo esta durmiendo. Al dia siguiente, la primera palabra (no tiene muchas en realidad) fue FROG y salió corriendo hacia el jardín, pero el Sr. Frog ya se había marchado.

In spite of that, we keep taking care of our garden: Ian prefers watering the plants rather than picking up the leaves.

A pesar de eso seguimos cuidando nuestro proyecto jardin: Ian prefiere regar las plantas en lugar de recoger las hojas.

Let’s go gardening / Vamos a sembrar

Since we came to this house we wanted to have a garden. We have enough space to do so, but the soil is not the best. While we wait to get some help to prepare the soil, we decided to start with some flowers and herbs in pots. We want to involve Ian in this activity. Then I thought it was a good idea show Ian how a seed transforms into a plant. We planted some lentils and beans to follow the process.

Desde que llegamos a esta casa hemos deseado tener un huerto y un jardín. Tenemos suficiente espacio para hacerlo, pero la tierra no es la apropiada. Mientras conseguimos ayuda para preparar la tierra, decidimos empezar con algunas flores y hierbas en macetas. Queremos involucrar a Ian en esta actividad. Entonces me pareció buena idea mostrarle como una semilla se transforma en una plantita como motivación. Hemos puesto a germinar unos frejolitos y unas lentejitas para seguir su proceso.

But I am impatient, so before the beans germinate we have already planted our flower seeds at the entrance to the house. Ian also wanted to turn the soil, but it was too hard, so he put all his energy into watering. He loves coming and going with his watering can. Now it is an activity that we do daily.

Pero soy impaciente y antes que estos germinaran hemos salido a sembrar nuestras semillas de flores en la entrada de la casa. Ian quiso imitarme removiendo la tierra pero estaba muy dura asi que puso toda su energía en regar. Le encanta ir y venir con el agua. Entonces es una actividad que haremos diariamente.

Note that we are using a spaghetti spoon to turn the soil :-) Well, I have to improvise; we just moved to Mexico and brought nothing but our clothes.

Notar que estamos usando una cuchara de espagueti para remover la tierra :-) Bueno, tengo que improvisar; acabamos de mudarnos a Mexico y no trajimos nada mas excepto nuestra ropa.
