Music and singing are a fun and effective way to help young children learn. We are pairing singing with movement and this is allowing Ian to not only hear the music, but also feel and move to the rhythms, express himself and learn new words.
At this moment, he is learning his body parts just listening and dancing these songs:
  • One Finger One Thumb Keep Moving
  • Head Shoulder Knees and toes
  • Doctor Knickerbocker, Knickerbocker, number nine
  • Dry Bones
  • Where is Thumbkin
At bedtime he likes to rub cream and talcum powder on his body. He enjoys this sensorial activity as well as recognizing and naming the parts of his body.
I am looking forward to having a whole body mirror. It will be very helpful for Ian to learn more about his body.

  • One Finger One Thumb Keep Moving
  • Head Shoulder Knees and toes
  • Doctor Knickerbocker, Knickerbocker, number nine
  • Dry Bones
  • Where is Thumbkin

Let's Wiggle / Bailemos

As I told you in the previous post, Ian is having so much fun dancing. He is exploring the ability and function of his own body. He suddenly has become very active, wanting to move around and explore whenever he get the opportunity. And dancing is doubtlessly advantageous, and for toddlers, it also helps them to learn more about how they can move their bodies and exercise different parts.
The music/song of the following video is part of the The Wiggles's CD Let's Wiggle. Ian loves The Wiggles music. Their lyrics and choreographies are simple and very fun, which is perfect for young children.

Two months ago, Ian was sad because he could not coordinate his movements to play the rhythm sticks, so I took them away. A couple of weeks ago I decided to put out the rhythm sticks again. As soon as Ian saw the rhythm sticks, wanted to play them. Two months is a significant time for the development of a child: Ian was able to play the rhythm sticks perfectly. Now, playing his instruments is a family activity where Ian always chooses the rhythm sticks for him and follows this routine over and over again:
  1. Assigns the instruments to everyone
  2. Indicates when to start playing (nobody can start if he does not do)
  3. Indicates when we must stop (leaves his rhythm sticks on the floor, picks our instruments and placed them on the floor in some order)
  4. Asks us to clap
And all of us follow his directions happily.

  4. Indica que debemos aplaudir
Todos obedecemos felices.

Swinging and singing / Cantando en el columpio

John built a swing for Ian a month ago; however, it was only until the last week when Ian wanted to use it. At this moment, swinging is part of his daily routine, he wants “sw tree” 1, 2 or 3 times a day, by about half an hour each time.
Ian is a very active child and I rarely see him as quiet as when he is swinging.
While he is on the swing, he listens thoughtfully one of his music CDs (he carries the CD player by himself). He has begun to sing the easiest parts, something like “ooooooh” :-). He gets so cute that I overcome my pollen and grass allergy and the itchs from mosquitoes and ants.

Paying attention to words / Poniendo atención a las palabras

Lately Ian has been very focused on talking and, his books and music CDs are his best sources to learn new vocabulary. His favorite book at this time is Llama Llama Red Pajama("Sha Sha" for him)

Llama Llama Red Pajama

The book addresses the fear that so many little children (such as Ian) feel when their moms leave their rooms at night. The story is narrated in rhyming fashion and the facial expressions of the illustrations are great.
Ian loves this book (I guess he understands the story very well) and he wants us to read it over and over again. His is more and more participating during reading: he is completing the phases increasingly (shyly, when he does not pronounce well the word and triumphantly when he thinks he has got the pronunciation correctly ), or, mimicking the behaviour of the little llama, which is so hilarious and cute (see the photo below where he's "wating wating for his mama...")

His favorite music CD is Yummy Yummy of The Wiggles. It is not new, however, the manner in which Ian heard it now is new. When he wants to listen (several times a day) he says "to to" (for "Hot Potato", one of the songs) shaking his arms and head (so cute) and stays in his room, so concentrated that he forgets that I am not with him. When I observe him secretly, sometimes he is very quiet, surely trying to understand the lyrics, other times singing the words he knows, dancing at other times or playing his instruments.

Speaking of instruments, we use a can of coffee as a drum. I have not emptied its content because sometimes he opens the lid and enjoys the coffe smell, it is also a good practice for him to remove and put the lid of the tin. Today, while we was listening to The Wiggles, alone, I smelt a delicious coffee smell, when I went to his room, he was spreading the coffee all over his body, he appeared to enjoy the feel so I left him and only when he finished I gave him a spoon to scoop back the coffee to the can. A mess that became a source of learning.

We used to have music time more than once a week. We just play some of Ian’s favorite CDs (at this moment Pop Go The Wiggles and Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies). Ian asks to play it many times and he always dances and repeats the numbers very loudly. And when we bought “maracas” (see the photo below) he went nuts.

Go The Wiggles and Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies).

I was excited and though he would enjoy other instruments just the same. When we had them, he wanted to play the rhythm sticks, he tried and tried but he couldn’t coordinate his movements to play them, nor would he let me teach him; that made him really sad and ever since then he does not enjoy our music times. I took way the sticks; but he seems to remember them and he always looks for them in the instrument box and then he gets crestfallen and does not want to participate anymore. I think we’ll keep having our music times but without instruments for a while.
