Statement of principles/ Declaración de principios

I am exhausted. I have lost my focus. I already had said this: I need to limit the number of the resources I read (books, blogs, and web sites).
I received the Montessori books a month ago. I was so anxious when I read them, so I got more overwhelmed and I started surfing the web again to find out how other families are teaching their toddlers at home. I found Tot School and suddenly, I was following many, many blogs, thinking that I should implement activities such as those I saw there, for example children learning the alphabet. And I lost my focus. I thought to expand the curriculum Montessori I had planned for Ian to add a bit of this and a bit of that (what a mess!).
The result was stress, I was sat at the computer too many hours, eating poorly, sleeping less, forceless to play with Ian, sharing no meaningful time with my husband, without time to register my experience in this blog, and of course I forgot the routine I had established.

Estoy exhausta.

Now, I really need to write my basic principles, my priorities, my aims to educate Ian at home.

I want:

  1. 1. Ian has fun while developing his love for learning, self-confidence and independence
  2. 2. Enjoy this Montessori journey
  3. 3. Have time for myself and for my husband, every day
  4. 4. Trust my instinct as a mother
I am aware that in the future I will need to read this principles over and over again to get my focus back, and it is ok, I always could start again.

It is time to think / Es hora de pensar

I am in a trial and error period with Montessori matters. For now I am picking out intuitively some ideas on the internet, mainly from other mom's blogs, but I am a structured person so I need to arrange a long-term plan to feel tranquil and confident to teach Ian at home. To do this, books are better for me, I need to focus on one or two of them; there is so much information on the Internet that I feel overwhelmed and I do not where to start.

After experiencing some frustrations, I’ve realized than my initial expectations were much too high. So, now it is time for reflective thinking. It is time to slow down and consider what works for us, what are my homeschooling goals for Ian, how much of the Montessori ideas I want to follow, how much we are able to perform. I have had visions of Montessori homeschooling that are really beyond our reach, but finally I am coming to the realization that even if we wanted to adhere to all the ideas of Montessori, it would not be possible. To mention one reason, we have many limitations living in this rural town; I cannot even buy simple things to make things at home.

While I am structuring our own (not perfect) Montessori homeschooling, I will do what I can from day by day and I will keep posting the successes and failures of teaching my Little Piggy at home.

Talking about failures, here is a corner with the first materials I made myself. I remember my expectations; I thought they would be interesting and useful for Ian, but what a disappointment: Ian ignored them completely (except the first time I presented them to him, as you can see the photos bellow). I kept this corner in the hope that some day Ian would change his mood and use the materials, but I was disappointed again: Ian insisted in throwing things about so in the end I decided to pack the materials away. That’s ok, I have learnt that it will take time, but more importantly it will take patience on my part.

I think that I should use this corner for myself (see my meditation items? I need to meditate a bit …. or maybe a lot :-)

Push me / Empújame

John has been doing some carpentry over the last two weeks helping prepare the Montessori environment for Ian and we know this will take several weeks! He is missing some tools and most importantly we still don’t know where in the city to buy wood, nor how we’ll get it home. Meanwhile John is recycling wood from scrap at his work. With this wood he built a work table for his workshop and yesterday almost finished a swing for Ian. There’s still a few more pieces of wood to start our garden project. We hung the swing in the front yard and Ian tried it; although he enjoyed it a lot, John decided that we’ll have to make a few changes to avoid it from being stolen.

Who is learning the most / ¿Quién está aprendiendo más?

While my Montessori books are coming, I have been reading some blogs, imagining Ian doing the activities posted, with the same level of concentration and abilities that the other children (some of them younger than him). But the results of putting into practice those ideas have been diverse.

We have tried activities of practical life, language, mathematics and art; however, Ian only seems to be willing to do the practical life ones. I remember the first Montessori exercise we tried was dry pouring. I had never seen Ian so concentrated, controlling his movements, noting his mistakes, correcting them and repeating the exercise, all in absolute silence. It was a beautiful revelation for me.

In other activities his reactions vary; in the worst case he rejects the activity completely and in the best case he does the exercise once and then doesn’t want to repeat it.

Over the last two weeks, I have put my energy into activities trying to get Ian to recognize, name and associate shapes, colors and numbers. However, when I presented the exercise, Ian did not seem to be paying attention. He began before I finished my explanation, he didn’t do the exercise “correctly” and almost always he didn’t complete the exercise. I was left sitting with my materials (several of them that I made myself) and my expectations were shattered.

Some of my thoughts were: Ian does not recognize the figures, Ian does not recognize the colors, he cannot do this, and he cannot do that. Then I looked for another way to stimulate his “learning”, but he continued doing it “incorrectly”.

Fortunately, Ian did not make me wait long to give me a great lesson. He has a puzzle of animals where the pieces are the same shape, so one half of any animal can be matched with a half of another. Ian ignored the puzzle for a long time and when he finally paid it attention he put pieces in whatever place, apparently without noticing that none of the shapes matched. And when I asked him to try it again he refused. Then one day, when he took the puzzle by himself, he correctly resolved all the animals as if it was the easiest thing in the world.

That and other similar events, made me think of several things that I want to change. In the future, I am going to:

  • Observe Ian more closely, noting which activities attract his attention
  • Offer him alternatives. He concentrates on the activities that he prefers, so I let him choose
  • Respect his routines and his learning process
  • Do not compare him with other children
  • Do not focus on results
  • Do not interrupt him while he is working
  • Remember that the fact Ian does not do an activity “correctly” does not necessarily mean that he “cannot” do it, he probably just “does not want to”

  • No interrumpirlo mientras trabaja

While making this list I thought about the activities that Ian actually likes and I realized that we have not done those things much since I started focusing (incorrectly) on Montessori activities.

Finally, I want to say that I am glad that I stopped to think about our activities; we’ll keep the good ones and now I understand what I should change. I am happy to be experiencing this process; it’s a daily learning process that’s very beautiful.

Montessori Beginning / Descubriendo Montessori

Although I have writing this blog for a week I did not mention the Montessori Method until yesterday. But in fact my reason for creating this blog was to record my experience educating Ian according to the Montessori Method. My hope is that someone in the same situation will be interested in reading and especially in writing comments and suggestions to me.

Our history with Montessori is very recent and despite the fact that the last few weeks we have been occupied with some Montessori activities, I felt too shy to confess it, especially after reading some amazing blogs of other mums.

When we lived in Uruguay, Ian attended a school based on a Spanish method called Optimistic. When we moved to Mexico (two months ago) I had expectations that Ian could keep going to school, but here the preschool education begins at 4 years of age. Then we began doing activities at home. I was focused on artistic activities (following the ideas of MaryAnn F. Koh in First Arts for Toddlers and Twos) and I had begun to prepare vocabulary cards. My mother applauded my initiative, in addition she suggested that I follow some method of teaching at home and she mentioned the Montessori Method as an example.

Immediately I began to research information on the Internet. At the moment I am waiting for a few books Basic Montessori: Learning Activities for Under-Fives , and “Teach Me to Do It Myself: Montessori Activities for You and Your Child” by Maja Pitamic. Also, surfing the web I found some videos in youtube that gave me an initial idea of what Montessori was about and the best thing I found was several very inspiring blogs fromw I’m picking up many ideas from them.

Inmediatamente empecé a buscar información en internet. En este momento esperando por los libros Basic Montessori: Learning Activities For Under-Fives y Teach Me to Do It Myself: Montessori Activities for You and Your Child de Maja Pitamic.

Since then we have incorporated new activities to Ian’s daily routine, John began to make some furniture for Ian and I have created some home-made materials. These have been strenuous days, with several frustrations, but I am very happy, convinced that we are going in the right direction. Now I only need a bit more patience and an understanding of the Montessori philosophy.
