Captive audience / Audiencia cautiva

Lately Ian is striving to learn new words (he does not know many words yet, perhaps because our family is bilingual).
When John or I say something he tries to imitate the sound of some word that he has just heard. When he uses the words that has learned, he does so in a louder voice than normal, staring at us, very proudly, he seems to say “did you hear what I said?” He likes us to see him when he speaks and celebrate his achievement.
When we read his books, we allow him to complete the sentences. I am surprised how many words he knows from his books. A few days ago I was astonished when he took his book First 100 Words and began to point at each picture a second or two before naming it.

I realized, after that experience, that I should help him to increase his vocabulary. So, I want to focus on teaching him words with which he can express his experiences. As one of his daily experiences is spending time in the garden, I made a place mat with garden-theme pictures: a tree, a flower, a leaf, grass, a bird, a frog, an ant, a watering can, a rake and other gardening tools.
The idea of the place mat came from a Lisa Nolan post where she recommends taking advantage of those moments of our daily lives when we have a captive audience (such as eating in this case), to teach a child who does not normally want to take a lesson.
The idea has been successful, during his meals Ian points to the place mat pictures and names them, then we say the words correctly (well, John says them correctly, my English is not so good) and he observes us closely and tries to improve his pronunciation. I am going to keep this place mat for a few days and then change it with another set of pictures/words.

Ian has been painting once a week for the last few weeks. I keep his masterpieces and scan them into my computer. Someday, I will make an art book with them all. Enjoy this virtual art gallery with some of my favorites:

This one was made using milk and food coloring, homemade paint and sponges.

In the next one, the circular prints were made with corks and shampoo and food coloring homemade paint.

This is a bubble wrap print. He used finger-painting that time.

More impressions. This time Ian used a shaped potato to print the flowers and paper towel tubes to print the circles.

For the next one, Ian painted with rollers over a paper doily made by auntie Kathy, who's gladdening us with her visit.

Our first routine, finally / Nuestra primera rutina, por fin

In the past we traveled a lot, so it was difficult to establish and follow a routine. I think it affected Ian’s sense of security and caused, or at least worsened his problems at bedtime. Now, as our life rhythm is calmer, I think that it is time to have a stable routine, even if it is just a rough guide for many of the basics. Besides helping Ian to make sense of his world and develop a sense of security, I think a routine will help me to soothe the stress that I feel when I wake up and don’t know what we are going to do the whole day at home.

Here is the first approach of our routine:
7:00Wake up time
Get dressed, brush teeth
Breakfast preparation
Breakfast
Play inside
Gardening
Play outside: Gross motor activities and games
Snack
Circle Time: movement, songs, finger plays
11:00Lunch Preparation
12:00Lunch
Books
13:00Nap
15:00Snack
Daily Activity (art, sensorial)
Play (eventually Montessori Activities)
Play outside
18:00Dinner Preparation
18:30Dinner
19:00Bed time

7:00Levantarse
Vestirse y lavarse
Preparar desayuno
Desayunar
Jugar dentro de casa
Jardinería
Jugar afuera: actividades de motricidad gruesa
Refrigerio
Momento musical
11:00Preparar almuerzo
12:00Almorzar
Leer libros
13:00Descansar
15:00Refrigerio
Actividad del dia (arte, sensorial)
Jugar o (eventualmente) actividad Montessori
Jugar afuera
18:00Preparar la cena
18:30Cenar
19:00Rutina para acostarse

As you can see, the only activities with set times are those related to sleeping and eating, everything else is just a guide. Some days Ian is agreeable, and he is into the programmed activities very quickly, but other days he is the mood to say “no” to everything.

I have a list of certain things I want to keep working on with Ian while we follow his routine, for example:
  • Wash hands before eating and preparing food
  • Brush teeth after eating
  • Pour his own water from a jug and drink from a glass
  • Pouring/scooping his own food (cereal, yogout, rice, etc.)
  • Using napkin
  • Set and clean hir own table
  • Push hir chair in
  • Put dirty clothes in the washing basket
  • Pick up rubbish and puts it in the bin
  • Waters plants
  • ake off his pants by himself
  • Regar plantas
  • Sacarse el pantalón
In the coming days I intend to plan activities in other areas (sensory development, language, mathematics and art) in which I want to focus my attention.
